Vidit Garg, a local boy from Jagadhri (District Yamuna Nagar), has achieved the rarest of rare feats of getting into IIM Ahmedabad with just 89.67%ile in CAT 2016. In all probability, it is the lowest ever CAT percentile with which a General Category student has ever made it to IIM Ahmedabad!
Vidit was very surprised when he was called for the AWT (Academic Writing Test) and PI (Personal Interview) at IIM Ahmedabad. He came to Delhi after getting the call and joined Edmyt for his AWT and PI preparation. He had just 3 weeks to prepare for the most important appointment ever of his life. His first question to his mentor, another V (Vijay) incidentally, was if he stood any real chance of getting into IIM A.
His doubt was based on his four major concerns:
Vijay, however, had a simple answer to the doubts posed by Vidit. "If there is a call, it has to be converted", His preparation was micro-managed. It wasdividedinto many parts: Work Experience, Academic Background, why IIMA, Goalclarity, Self-Awareness (his native-place, family background, strengths, weaknesses, etc.), Current Affairs, among others.
Extensive lists of anticipated questions from each of the areas were created. Vidit would write the answers to all those questions and would also discuss the answers with his mentors at Edmyt.
He had a few rigorous prep-sessions with Ankur Srivastava (IIML 2003-05), and Amandeep (NALSAR). They helped him develop an analytical approach towards interview questions and their possible logical answers. Abhas, a civil servant, helped him understand some crucial contemporary issues.
Vijay was always around and would discuss preparations angles with him almost every day. Vijay, in his 17-year career as a mentor, had not seen many students prepare as meticulously as Vidit did.
The IIM-A interview was on February 25. Vidit appeared for it with thorough preparation and was pleasantly surprised when most of the questions he faced were the ones he had so exhaustively prepared for.
Vidit had calls from IRMA and IMI(Delhi) as well. Heduly appeared for these two interviews. The IRMA result was declared on March 31 and Vidit's name was not in the list. Vidit was worried and told Vijay, "Sir, I could not make it to IRMA"
Vijay response was to the point, “You did not want to be there, Vidit.”
On, April 10, 2017, a 5th A-(IIM) Ahmedabad-agreed to prepare him for his career.
